Church Council

The following are excerpts from our Constitution and Bylaws, explaining the responsibilities and qualifications of our Elders:

Albany First Assembly of God shall be directed and administered by the Lead Pastor and the Church Council. The Church Council shall consist of not less than seven (7) nor more than nine (9) Elders, including the Chair (Lead Pastor).

The Elders shall govern with the Lead Pastor in all matters pertaining to Albany First Assembly in its spiritual life and in the ministry of its ordinances. They shall also:
-Provide counsel and mutual assistance in the administration of the business and work of the church.
-Serve without compensation, except for their actual expenses.

Candidates for the position of Elder shall be men of mature Christian experience and knowledge whose lives and conduct conform to Scripture (1 Timothy 3:2-7, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Peter 5:1-4). Married men shall be in a sexually faithful, heterosexual, monogamous marriage where neither partner has been previously divorced, except where the divorce occurred prior to conversion as a result of the previous spouse’s sexual infidelity or because of abandonment of the believer by an unbeliever (2 Corinthians 5:17, Matthew 5:31-32, 1 Corinthians 7:15). Candidates shall be voting members in good standing in the congregation and capable of efficiently discharging the duties pertaining to their office.

Elder candidates shall be consistent in their attendance at the public services of the congregation and in tithing to the local church. They shall have a cooperative spirit (Hebrews 13:7) and be active in ministry and service to the church and/or to the community. Employees of the church shall not be eligible to serve in this position.

Elders shall be selected for a term of three (3) years. An Elder may not serve more than two (2) successive terms. After a minimum of one (1) year absence, a person again may be eligible to be a candidate.
